Corso System Dynamics per dottorandi all'Università Insubria

Abstract del Contenuto del corso:

Learning Organization and Strategic Knowledge Management means, for an organization,  the acquisition of a mental model (Peter Senge 1990). To perceive such a challenging objective it is necessary to identify, clarify and improve our inner worldview and understand how the dynamics of the organization structure evolve and  govern critical variables (levers) in order to better support actions and decisions. Thanks to the understanding of influence relationships between world “participants” and an integrated and complex view of phenomena (systems), which is supported by a correct management of information universe, it is possible to develop System Dynamics (J. W. Forrester) models and use simulations to be aware of what are the possible alternative consequences of our decisions. Such a paradigm allows us to acquire a real Systems Thinking approach and to recognize relationships between time ‘variables’, instead of finding out, statically, simple structures.

System Dynamics (SD) modeling has been used in many different contexts, For example, in ICT domain can be applied in Project Management (PM) process control. In particular an innovative and original application could be in engaging Agile SW development approach through a SD modeling analysis and hence building a simulation model in order to best support alternative PM decisions,  also in relation to present/ideal organizational environment.

Many Small-Medium Enterprise (SME) Decision Support Systems are also developed involving SD simulation models in order to build the so called Enterprise Dashboards and support medium- top managers in overall enterprise strategic decisions.

Uncertainty is everywhere. Resistance is futile but simulating scenarios helps!

The phenomenon of uncertainty, how does it affects our daily lives and how does it come to hone our way of organising is the theme of the EURAM 2015 conference to be held in Warsaw. Indeed, contemporary management theory and practice struggle to adequately tackle, rein and perhaps ride uncertainty. To appropriately cope with the theme, two major SIGs, Entrepreneurship and Organisational Behaviour, have decided to sponsor a cross-disciplinary initiative. In both SIGs, topics will address the issue of uncertainty from the point of view of computer modelling and simulation. In the Entrepreneurship SIG, a topic is proposed with the title Visionary entrepreneurship in complex worlds: Computer modelling, business games and scenario analysis and in the Organisational Behaviour a topic is proposed with the title Agent-Based Models and Computer Simulation in Organisational Behaviour. The aim of the two topics is to foster discussions on how theory of complex systems, and the now rich connected panoply of conceptual and theoretical instruments to bridle complexity, may support decision-making in the face of uncertainty. The underpinning idea is that these theoretical and methodological tools may support decision-makers in interpreting uncertainty not only as the visible, and tangible, result of unobservable randomness but as the necessary behaviour of complex socio-economic systems. The two topics, in combination, will try to investigate how different approaches in computer modelling and simulation are, and increasingly will be, necessary tools in the repertoire of management and organisation theorists and practitioners.

We expect that this kind of cross-cutting topic proposals will become an increasingly consolidated practice in the conference. This innovation, we hope, will produce value by creating links and stimulate the interplay among scholars that belong to different SIGs.

Call for Paper FAO - Complex-systems dynamics principles applied to food systems

In the context of the project “Meeting urban food needs”, the Food and Agriculture Organization of UN (FAO), in collaboration with the System Dynamics Italian Chapter and the University of Turin, has launched a call for papers on

Complex-systems dynamics principles applied to food systems.

Selected papers will stimulate discussion on how complex-systems dynamics perspective can contribute to the understanding of the characteristics, structure, performance and behaviour of food systems meeting urban food needs and to the formulation of appropriate policies, strategies and investments plans.

At least five authors among those whose paper will be published (one author per paper) will be invited to attend an expert meeting in FAO-Rome in 2015. Travel expenses will be paid by FAO while all other expenses will have to be covered by the invited participants.

The B.S.Lab Symposia aim to be an arena of constructive confrontation among scholars, researchers and practitioners from different research fields and from all over the world, with more than 50 countries involved in the past edition 2014.
The Business Systems Laboratory is a young, friendly and approachable scientific society that aims to create a wide, cross-disciplinary and effective global network of researchers and practitioners in the business systems fields.
The Third Business Systems Laboratory International Symposium focuses on the epistemological, theoretical, methodological, technical and practical contributions that can represent advancements in the theory and practice ofBusiness Management.

The Symposium aims to address the global economic and social challenges of our times by a systemic perspective, shedding the light to the several interactions between natural social and economic systems. Being aware of these interactions provides a better understanding of the principles that can help to solve some of today's most pressing social and economic issues.

The criticalities and the opportunities of our times are faced according to the cutting edge research and practice in social science. This multidisciplinary perspective includes: management, economics, engineering and sociology.
While focusing on the Systemic perspective, the Symposium includes all the scientific approaches in order to foster constructive debates and confrontations to create new perspective of research and practice in the business systems field.
With the above-mentioned scopes the Symposium 2015 calls for submissions in 19 proposed tracks and in the poster session.
